The new Mobile District Headquarters for the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will replace an existing aging facility in downtown Mobile, AL. Located on the site of the Mobile Civic Center, the new 6-story office building is part of a redevelopment of the complex that includes retail and residential to create a mixed-use destination.
Inspired by USACE’s vision statement of “Engineering Solutions for the Nation’s Toughest Challenges,” the design reflects the strength and order of the projects the agency manages. The secure facility is designed to meet the security requirements and progressive collapse guidelines for the agency, yet also creates a welcoming front to visitors with a two-story exterior entrance portal at the northwest corner. The exterior is articulated with projecting solar shading devices that respond to the building orientation to mitigate solar heat gain and glare on the perimeter.
