For many years, the Plainfield Park District held all of their indoor recreation activities in local schools and leased a vacant bank for their pre-school and daycare programs. The Park District commissioned Wight to design and construct a new recreation center to accommodate all of their needs in one location and to be ready for move-in by December 2018, when their lease expired.

The new recreation center is located in the District’s Bott Community Park, alongside current athletic fields. Using our Design Led-Design Build approach with a GMAX (guaranteed maximum price), Wight provided all civil, structural, and MEP engineering; architectural design; cost estimating; construction management; and landscape architecture required for the recreation center, parking, and adjoining trails.

The recreation center includes two full-court gymnasiums, a fitness center, offices, a multipurpose room for special recreation programs, an elevated walking track, and preschool/daycare accommodations. The space is also available for community programs such as painting classes and other recreational activities.

PARC is the first recreation center in the US to receive both PHIUS+2015 certification and PHIUS+ Source Zero certification.

Net Zero Energy Building

Wight assisted the Park District in obtaining a $1M Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation Grant to design the recreation center as a Net Zero Energy building. Solar panels on the roof will generate enough energy to offset the building’s utilities. The facility is the first Net Zero Energy park district building in Illinois and recently received Passive House certification. PARC is the first recreation center in the US to receive both PHIUS+2015 certification and PHIUS+ Source Zero certification.
