Integrating a secure and sustainable facility into an urban context.
1/1
The Norfolk Field Office is a 141,000 sf office/annex development that acted as an anchor to an existing business park development in the Greenbrier section of Chesapeake, Virginia. This location offered an excellent opportunity for a sustainable development in an urban context. Additionally, this project offered the opportunity to provide an aesthetically uplifting solution that helped establish a standard of quality while weaving seamlessly into the existing neighborhood fabric.
The project’s design combines traditional formality and contemporary design. The axial approach to the central entry point, its articulated wall, and floating cornice are all elements of traditional civic architecture reinvented with a modern vocabulary. This central site entrance is further reinforced with a two-story monumental Visitor Lobby. A number of architectural details were employed to reduce the overall appearance of the building to provide a more compatible neighborhood scale.
This project features:
Secured 10-acre campus with blast-resistant building enclosure and progressive collapse
Decorative metal canopy system that provides covered employee parking
Landscaped employee courtyard with vegetated walls to shield employees from offsite threats
Redundant mechanical infrastructure and 24/7 capability in mission-critical rooms
