Over the past decade, Wight has built a strong relationship with the B.R. Ryall YMCA, supporting multiple renovation projects at its Glen Ellyn facility. Through this work and the bold vision of new leadership, it became clear the Y needed a transformational change. This led to the creation of a Master Plan to revitalize the aging facility and prepare it for the future.

Wight helped lead this vision by identifying over 10,000 square feet of underutilized space and comparing it with the Y’s desired program areas. We saw the opportunity to achieve this transformation within the existing building—without expansion. More than 45,000 square feet were reimagined into active spaces, including fitness, dance, and spin studios, an Intergenerational Activity Space, the Kids Campus, flexible Multipurpose Rooms, and a Teen Center with a Kitchen, STEM, and Arts and Crafts rooms.

A new welcome desk now provides visibility into key areas for added safety, including secured access to childcare. Formerly dark corridors have been opened up, offering views into active zones and a new pool viewing area. Added windows bring daylight into widened hallways, and a new stair connects activities across floors. Previously unused space in the heart of the first floor now houses intergenerational lounges—social hubs for youth, seniors, and families to connect between programs.

Guided by the Y’s priorities—welcoming all, promoting health, supporting teens and seniors, and delivering quality child care—we incorporated biophilic design, natural materials, and a calming color palette to serve an intergenerational community. The result is a vibrant, flexible facility that allows the Y to better serve and positively impact its community for years to come.
